Why is Costa Rica fishing so popular?

The gorgeous weather and low wind conditions create the perfect backdrop for one of the largest assortments of fish in the world. From quaint mountain lakes, streams, and rivers, all the way down to the Pacific and Caribbean Coast.

Which airport should I fly into?

There are two international airports in Costa Rica. Juan Santamaria Airport (SJO) in Alajuela, is located in the Central Valley region north of San Jose. The other, Daniel Oduber Airport (LIR) is in Liberia, and has access to locations in the northwestern Guanacaste region. It is important to understand that many Costa Rica destinations can be reached by domestic flights. If you are interested in fishing up north, fly into Daniel Oduber Airport. If you would like to fish in the south, choose Juan Santamaria Airport.

What is the best time of year for fishing in Costa Rica?

Due to deep water levels coupled with the migration patterns of the pelagic fish species, we are fortunate to be able to catch many of these species throughout the year. But there are peak times for different species: Sailfishing, Marlin, Roosterfish, Dorado, Tuna and several other varieties of fish can be caught any month of the year. The following seasons should be considered if you have a particular fish in mind:

SAILFISH: April through September
BLACK MARLIN: April through August with a peak run generally in May.
BLUE AND STRIPPED MARLIN: December through March
ROOSTERFISH: Caught year round
MAHI MAHI OR DORADO: Most prevalent in Spring through late Fall.
YELLOWFIN TUNA: May through November
